A Monopolar Symmetrical Hybrid Cascaded DC/DC Converter for HVDC Interconnections

With the rapid development of voltage source converter-based high-voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission, it is an irresistible trend that HVdc grid will come into being. High-voltage and high-power dc/dc converters serve as dc transformers in to interconnect lines with different ratings. This article proposes a monopolar symmetrical converter which composed cascaded half-bridge submodules series-connected insulated-gate bipolar transistors. hybrid topology features low capital costs, high efficiency, small footprint, bidirectional power transfer capability. Operation principle, parameter design, control strategies this are introduced. A 480-MW, ±500 kV/±160 kV simulated verify its performance evaluate efficiency. In addition, downscaled prototype rated at 2.4 kW, ±300 V/±100 V has been built tested. Experimental results further validate effectiveness proposed converter.
